Presented as an amendment whose “purpose is to scale up the effectiveness of the efforts to combat domestic violence and violence against women”, the Law Proposal no. 2/4290 on Amending Turkish Penal Code and Some Laws was submitted to the Office of the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on 16 March 2022 and put up for a vote and passed by the Assembly on 12 May 2022.
Following the Pride Week events banned on Monday, June 20; The Pride March was also banned by the Istanbul Governor’s Office on June 26.
Turkey’s 4th National Action Plan (4th NAP) on Combating Violence Against Women (VAW) announced on 1 July 2021, the day Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention, does not at all refer to the concept of gender equality; neither does it include any mention of the Istanbul Convention, accepted as the most comprehensive roadmap for combating violence, which had been in effect in Turkey since 2014 and cited as a reference 22 times in the previous action plan (3rd NAP).
Laying claim to and protecting the Istanbul Convention is an essential issue for all those who want to live in an equal, free and just country. We invite all of society to take ownership of the Convention and our future!
